Mutant Beetle Drive

Tim Morrell

Aim of the Game

To be the first person to fully shade in their mutant beetle.

Overview

Each player will have their own playing board. This board contains four beetles. One beetle is in colour. The other three beetles are in black and white. One black and white beetle is used per game so up to three games can be played with each board.

Printable Beetle Drive Board Game - Standard Board
Each beetle is made up of the following parts:

  • Body
  • Head
  • Legs
  • Wings
  • Feelers
  • Eyes
  • Tongue
  • Tail
  • Claws
  • Poison Barbs

All beetles have one head and one body but the number of other body parts will vary depending on the type of beetle.

At the top of each board is a dice roll table. This shows the numbers 2 to 12 which are all the possible totals that can be formed by rolling two dice. Besides each number is a selection of beetle body parts.

The party host will roll two dice and announce the total. Each player can then (if possible) “use” a body part. They can choose between any body parts that are displayed alongside the announced number. Each dice roll table is different. In the above a roll of 8 allows the player to use a leg or a barb. On another board a roll of 8 may allow the player to use a feeler or a tail.

To “use” a body part means to shade in that specific body part on your black and white beetle. The first person to shade in all the body parts on their beetle is the winner.

"Shading In" Rules

The body of every beetle is already shaded in. Further body parts can be shaded in according to the announced dice roll. However body parts can only be shaded in if they are attached to another body part that has already been shaded in.

If you look at the starting position of beetle 1 you can see that the body is already shaded in. Therefore the player can use:

  • Head
  • Wings
  • Legs
  • Tail

As all these body parts attach directly to the beetle's body.

A player cannot use:

  • Eyes
  • Tongue
  • Feelers
  • Claws
  • Barbs

As these body parts only attach to other body parts that have not yet been shaded in.

The party host keeps rolling the two dice and calling out the totals until someone calls out that they have completely shaded in their beetle. This player is the winner.

Preparation you will need to do before the party

  • Obtain 2 dice
  • Obtain a pencil for each player so they can shade in their beetles

Game Set Up

  1. Give one playing board and a pencil to each player.
  2. The Party Host should take the dice.

Playing the game

The first game will use the “Standard Mutant Beetle - Greyscale Variety” which has the number one in the centre of its body.

  1. The party host should roll the two dice and call out the total.
  2. All players should look at the top of the board to see what body parts are associated with this number.
  3. They should now look at “Greyscale Beetle 1” and see if any of the associated body parts can be shaded in. (On the first roll only heads, wings, legs or tails can be shaded in, as these are the only body parts that are directly attached to the beetle’s already shaded in body.)
  4. Each player may shade in one item if permissible. E.g. one leg or one wing.
  5. Shading in a body part may give the player more options on the next dice roll. For example once a player has shaded in a leg, next go (if the dice roll is favourable) they may be able to shade in the claw attached to that leg.
  6. The party host keeps rolling the dice until a player shouts out that they have shaded in their entire beetle. This player is the winner.

Two further games can be played using the “double feelered double tailed beetle” and the “triple eyed double winged beetle”.
