Snakes, Ladders & Farmyard Animals

Tim Morrell

Aim of the Game

To be the first player to negotiate the snakes, ladders and farmyard animals on your unique playing board and arrive exactly on the square 100 finish.

Overview of game

Each player will have their own snakes and ladders board. Each board has its own unique layout of snakes and ladders. Each player places their playing piece on square 1 of their board. They move their playing piece according to the dice roll made by the party host.

If their playing piece lands on a ladder they move their playing piece up the board to the top of the ladder. If their playing piece lands on a snake’s tongue they slide their playing piece down the board to the snake’s tail. If they land on a farmyard animal bonus (cat, dog, pig, sheep, donkey or rooster) they move their playing piece forward the appropriate number of squares but only if they make the animal’s noise. The first player to land exactly on square 100 wins.

Preparation you will need to do before the party

  • Obtain one dice
  • Obtain one playing piece for all players. Small coins would suffice.

Game Set Up

  1. Each player should take one of the playing boards.
  2. The Party Host should take the dice.

Playing the game

  1. All players should put their playing piece on the square 1 “START” space on their board.
  2. The Party Host should roll the dice and call the number rolled aloud.
  3. All players should move their playing piece the appropriate number of squares.
  4. If their playing piece lands at the foot of a ladder then they should move their playing piece up the ladder.
  5. If their playing piece lands on the tongue of a snake then they should move their playing piece down the snake to the square in which the snake’s tail rests.
  6. If their playing piece lands on a square featuring a farmyard animal then they should move forward the number of squares shown in blue by the side of the animal but only if they make the animal’s noise.
  7. Sometimes the animal bonus may move the player onto the foot of a ladder or onto another animal bonus. If so they move their playing piece up the ladder or claim the second bonus.
  8. Repeat from step 2 until there is a winner.

Winning the game

The winner is the first player to land on the square 100 “FINISH” square.

The winner must land EXACTLY on the square 100 “FINISH” square. If a player is on the top row of the board and the number rolled by the Party Host would take them past square 100 then they should remain on their current square.
